Alabama women's basketball beats Memphis as four players score in double figures
Alabama women’s basketball beat Memphis 71-44 on Tuesday night in Coleman Coliseum for its fourth straight win.
The Crimson Tide (5-2) was led by Brittany Davis with 14 points and six rebounds and Megan Abrams with 14 points. Jada Rice added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Barber scored 13 points after returning with a cut above her right eye.
"It says a lot about how they share the basketball how they feed and play off one another," Alabama coach Kristy Curry said about having four starters in double figures. "They are starting to learn and understand the spacing and where each other are, what their strengths and weakness are. It's great to see the balance."
Fast start for the Crimson Tide
Davis had 12 first-quarter points as the Crimson Tide took a 25-13 lead to end the first quarter. Alabama shot 55% from the field while holding Memphis (6-2) to 40% shooting. Alabama had three steals and outrebounded the Tigers 11-7.
Strong defensive outing
Alabama held Memphis to its lowest scoring output of the season and below its average of 71 points a game. Alabama held the Tigers to 30.4% from the field and 29.2% from 3-point range. The Crimson Tide allowed 13 offensive rebounds and four second-chance points. Alabama had 10 steals that it turned into 15 points.
Alabama wins in the paint
The Crimson Tide scored 38 points inside the paint compared to 14 for the Tigers. Alabama outrebounded the Tigers 44-34, but Alabama was able to turn the 14 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points.
"The thing I love about the 38 (points in the paint) was that it was against the zone for the majority of the night," Curry said. "We got the ball to the paint off penetration, high post, low post offensive boards. Against the zone you have to have ball reversal, you got to get paint touches but then also in transition I thought we didn't let the zone get set. Love our aggressiveness tonight and our decision making and it makes a big difference."
Alabama takes on Houston on Friday (6 p.m., SEC Network+).
