Alabama basketball set to face Big Ten opponent in Phil Knight Invitational

·2 min read

The Alabama basketball team will have its hands full against nonconference opponents in the upcoming 2022-2023 season. As if it weren’t hard enough already, Alabama is now slated to face Michigan State in the first round of the Phil Knight invitational. As shared by Alabama Men’s Basketball Twitter, Alabama will face the Spartans on November 24 at 9:30 p.m. CST in Portland, Oregon. The game will be played at the Moda Center and will be aired on ESPN.

If the Tide are able to defeat the Spartans, they would advance to play the winner of the UConn-Oregon matchup at 9:00 p.m. CST on November 25 on ESPN2. However, if they lose, they would face the loser between UConn and Oregon at 11:30 p.m. CST on November 25 on ESPN2. Both second-round games would be played in Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It will certainly be a challenging tournament for the young Alabama basketball team.

One of the more interesting headlines will be Tide head coach Nate Oats colliding with Spartans head coach Tom Izzo. According to Rainer Sabin of AL.com, Izzo actually used his connection with Nick Saban to get Oats the job at Alabama. Both Izzo and Saban were head coaches for their respective sports teams at Michigan State in the 1980s.

Alabama will also take on non-conference opponents Gonzaga, Memphis, Houston and South Alabama. It won’t be easy on a team that will still be in search of some chemistry. They will have to do it on the fly against some of the more elite college basketball teams in the country.
