The city of Akron intends to lift the downtown curfew Sunday morning.

The curfew will remain in place Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

It will then lift in the morning and not be reinstated Sunday night "absent additional public safety concerns," a release from the city said.

The city issued two curfews for downtown in response to protests following the shooting death of Jayland Walker by police. Overnight protests in the last two weeks sometimes became violent, and police used force and tear gas on protesters.

The curfew originally started at 10 p.m. but it was pushed back an hour after nights of mostly peaceful protests, and to help downtown businesses avoid closing early.

Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan had said the curfew was under daily review.
