Aiken County Public Library events for the month of January

Jan. 7---- Adult French conversation is offered from 2-3:30 p.m. Fridays, Jan. 13, 20 and 27. This is not for beginners. — Coloring for Grown Ups will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the Creative Lab on the first floor. Bring coloring pencils and felt pens. Coloring sheets and refreshments will be provided. Sign up at the reference desk or call 803-642-2020, ext. 3.

— A Book Club meets on the third and fourth Tuesday of the month in the first floor meeting room from 2:30-3:45 p.m. Group A meets Jan. 24 and will discuss "The Thursday Murder Club" by Richard Osman. — The Friends of the Aiken County Library will hold their annual meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, in the first floor meeting room.

— The Friends of The Aiken County Library Present: A Book Signing by Anna Dangerfield and Lilian Brannon from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. Dangerfield and Brannon will present their new book, "Hopelands Gardens and Rye Patch: The Friends' Story" in the first floor meeting room. A discussion of the book will be at 6 p.m. followed by a brief Q and A and book signing. This event is free of charge; however, reservations are required and must be received by Tuesday, Jan. 10. Space is limited to 70 guests. In anticipation of a full house, kindly submit any cancellations via email 24 hours prior to the event. Light refreshments will be served. Books will be available for purchase for $40, and cash or check accepted. Proceeds of book sales benefit the Friends of Hopelands Gardens and Rye Patch.

— "The Woman King," rated PG-13, will be shown at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, in the first floor meeting room. "The Woman King" is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, "The Woman King" follows the emotionally epic journey of Gen. Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for.

— Storytime for babies, toddlers and preschoolers will be held at from 10:15-10:30 a.m. and 11-11:15 a.m. Jan. 11, 18, and 25. To register, call 803-642-2020 x. 1121. Space is limited.

— Activity kits are available starting Jan. 2 until supplies last. No holds.

The Aiken County Public Library is at 314 Chesterfield St. S.W. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. It is closed on Sundays, and will be closed Monday, Jan. 16, for the MLK Day holiday.
