Former Cincinnati Bearcats standout cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, the New York Jets' first-round pick (fourth overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft, tweeted Wednesday that when he told reporters he paid "50" to teammate D.J. Reed for the No. 1 jersey, he meant $50 - not $50,000.

Gardner wore No. 1 at UC. He wore No. 20 while taking part in the Jets' organized team activities.

From Gardner via Twitter:

Reed, a veteran defensive back, signed a free-agent deal with the Jets and chose No. 1 about one month before the Jets selected Gardner in the draft.

Last month, the Bearcats welcomed back Gardner to throw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of an American Athletic Conference game against Memphis at UC Baseball Stadium.

Earlier in May, Gardner signed his rookie contract with the Jets.
