During an American Hockey League game on Friday, forward Jarid Lukosevicius of the Grand Rapid Griffins threw a vicious headbutt at Iowa Wild forward Gerald Mayhew.

Lukosevicius appropriately received a match and major penalty as a result of his actions. The AHL will likely look at the play and hand out further discipline as they see fit.

Across 16 games with the Griffins this season, Lukosevicius has four goals and one assist.

Naturally, seeing this video drums up memories of when Zinedine Zidane of the French national soccer team headbutted Italy’s Marco Materazzi during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Headbutting your opponent wasn’t a sound strategy back then, and 13 years later, it remains a less-than-ideal tactic.

The Wild defeated the Griffins 4-2.
