We are quickly approaching the start of the 2020 NFL Season and teams around the league put a few final touches to their 53-man rosters. The deadline for roster cuts ended at 4:00 pm EST on Saturday, September 5, but teams weren’t stagnant on Sunday.
Rosen to the Bucs’ Practice Squad
The Dolphins cut QB Josh Rosen over the weekend, but he didn’t stay team-less for long. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Rosen behind Tom Brady, Blaine Gabbert, and Ryan Griffin. This will be Rosen’s third team in three years after being drafted 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals.
The move will reunite Rosen with former coach Byron Leftwich who is now the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay. Despite high hopes for Rosen after the draft, he failed to produce on the field. In 14 games in 2018, Rosen threw 217 completions on 393 attempts, 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He finished as the QB34. Yes, that is correct. The QB34 when there are only 32 teams in the league. He played in only six games last year and was benched in favor of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.
There may be an opportunity for Rosen to see action this year. By being signed to the practice squad, he has the flexibility to move to another team if a starting position opens up. With this being the year of COVID-19 and soft tissue injuries, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rosen ends up starting at some point this season. I am not jumping at the opportunity to take him in fantasy, however.

Adrian Peterson now in Detroit
RB Adrian Peterson was the first big name to get cut prior to Saturday’s roster deadline by the Washington Football Team. Earlier this offseason, Washington released RB Derrius Guice after a domestic abuse altercation. By releasing Peterson, Washington is planting their flag on the youth in their backfield.
Washington currently has former Buccaneer Peyton Barber, rookie running backs Antonio Gibson and Bryce Love, as well as pass-catching back J.D. McKissic. In terms of fantasy, Gibson stands out the most as the RB who can post the most production with Love right behind him. If you have already participated in your league’s draft, check for either Gibson or Love on the waiver wire if you are looking for running back depth.
Even though Peterson was cut from Washington, he quickly found a new home in Detroit. He signed a one-year deal with incentives and will be reunited with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Bevell was the OC in Minnesota during Peterson’s 10-year run with the Vikings. Peterson has finished in the top 10 for rushing yards in eight seasons as well as six seasons in the top 10 for rushing touchdowns. He still believes he has enough in the tank to be productive on the field. Last year, he posted 848 yards on 211 rush attempts and five touchdowns. He will join an already crowded backfield with Kerryon Johnson and rookie D’Andre Swift battling for the starting role.
Peterson and Johnson are both going late enough in drafts that I don’t feel terrible about picking one if I had to. But, this backfield is going to be a mess during the season. I would prefer to avoid the Lions backfield completely if I can help it. Swift is currently dealing with a leg issue even though he did return to practice. Johnson has yet to play a full 16 games in the NFL but may be getting the heavier workload before Peterson or Swift take over or if he gets hurt.
