Adi Hütter: “We must learn from this defeat for the future”

Very disappointed by the scenario and the result of the match against a very clinical Stade de Reims, the Monegasque manager tried to explain the defeat of AS Monaco on the return of Ligue 1 (1-3).

A fall that hurts. At the end of a match where Reims took the lead twice, our Rouge et Blanc fell against a clinical Champagen side (1-3). It was a setback on their return to the Stade Louis-II in Ligue 1, which Adi Hütter tried to analyze after the match. Extraits 🎙️

Good evening coach. What is your analysis of this defeat?

First of all I think this is the worst match for AS Monaco since I arrived at the Club. Everyone was obviously very upset in the locker room after the match. We are also very disappointed for our fans, who deserved better. We must learn from this defeat. Maybe it’s better that it arrives now rather than in a few weeks. We have to accept it and learn from it, but I can’t take anything positive from tonight.

I am responsible for this team, and I did not expect this match after our performance in the Coupe de France, which was completely different. When you're AS Monaco, you can't lose like that.

It’s a defeat that comes after our qualification in Lens, reminding us that every victory is earned and through a big battle. With this kind of performance, we cannot hope to reach the Top 3 at the end of the season. I am responsible for this team, and I did not expect this match after our performance in the Coupe de France, which was completely different. When you’re AS Monaco, you can’t lose like that.

What happened in defense?

I think that on the first goal, it was just a very nice action from Teddy Teuma, who scored a great goal. Until then, they had no chances during the first 20 minutes, unlike us who missed our chances in front of goal. After our equalizer, we were caught out by the second Reims goal. We lacked structure in the second half, and our body language was not good.

What was the watchword in the second half?

Reims defended very well, even if we made it easy for them. So in the second half, I decided to bring on Folarin Balogun and then Myron Boadu to create danger offensively, by only playing with two midfielders. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to create much apart from Balo’s chance in added time. It was difficult for me to see this today.

Yet you could have turned things around…

It was the perfect moment to equalize after the break. We then had 40 minutes to change the face of the match. But we conceded a second goal where we didn’t defend well. And at 2-1, it changed our mentality unfortunately. We must understand that in every match it can be difficult to win. However, we had the opportunity to score in the first half, but we didn’t do it.

I am angry after this defeat. In any case, it may be important for the future, in order to change things. I also have to be self-critical. I have over 1000 matches as a player and coach, and I know these kinds of matches can happen. It’s up to us to react.
