Active Fit: Contact Lens Care

Contact lenses are a great alternative to wearing glasses for children who need vision correction. Children can properly and safely care for their contacts with the below tips provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:

  • Wash your hands before handling lenses. Carefully dry your hands with a clean, lint-free cloth.

  • Clean and disinfect your contact lenses as directed by an eye care professional and only use the recommended products and solutions. Please note that cleaning, rinsing, and the use of most care solutions is eliminated if daily disposable lenses are prescribed.

  • Never expose your contact lenses to any kind of water or saliva, which can harvest germs or bacteria.

  • Do not wear lenses for longer than prescribed. Do not sleep in lenses unless prescribed as safe to wear when sleeping.

  • Never wear another person’s lenses.

  • When playing sports, wear safety goggles or glasses over your lenses.

  • Keep a pair of backup glasses.

  • Never put a contact lens into an eye that is red.

  • If your eye is itching, burning, irritated, or red, remove lenses after washing your hands and call your eye care professional.

Contact lenses should always be prescribed by an eye care professional. Some contacts are replaced each day with a new pair, and others are replaced on a monthly basis. Either type of contact may be prescribed depending on the child and their vision. For any questions regarding your child’s vision, contact the primary care physician or consult a local ophthalmologist or optometrist.
