ACM baseball off to hot start

Mar. 1—CUMBERLAND — The Allegany College of Maryland baseball team is off to a 6-0 start including a pair of wins over a top 15 opponent.

The Trojans beat Virginia Peninsula 11-3 in eight innings and 5-1 in seven in the season-opening doubleheader.

ACM then swept the 15th-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, defeating Lackawanna (Pa.) 4-3 and 5-1.

The Trojans beat CCBC Dundalk 8-5 in game one of a doubleheader.

Game two was tied at 13 after six innings and was suspended due to darkness.

ACM scored the final four runs when the game resumed the next day, winning 17-13.

Several players have had hot starts at the plate for the Trojans.

Of Brady Gavula's 11 hits in his first six games, four have left the park. He has 11 RBIs in 19 at-bats for a .579 batting average and .522 on-base percentage.

He's only struck out twice and stole a pair of bases.

Christian Toledo has six hits in 24 at-bats with six RBIs and a home run.

Cesar Ibarra has 15 at-bats and has reached safely in 11, currently holding a .429 on-base percentage.

Nazir Mendez has 12 official at-bats, but has drawn 13 walks.

Several pitchers have also had notable performances.

In the second game of ACM's doubleheader with Dundalk, Aiden Walker went 3 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, one run and one walk with six strikeouts.

Toledo earned the win in game two, going three shutout innings without allowing a hit or walk.

Walker has pitched 9 1/3 innings so far and holds a 2.89 ERA.

Timmy Jones has thrown 7 1/3 innings and struck out nine with a 1.23 ERA.

Gavula had a monster day, going 4 of 5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs.

In game one against Dundalk, Gavula went 3 of 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Toledo was the standout hitter against Lackawanna. He had three hits, three RBIs, a home run and a double in the two games.

Ibarra recorded three hits while Gavula hit a home run and drove in three RBIs in game one against Virginia Peninsula.

Gavula and Johnny Antonelli each recorded two hits in game two.

The Trojans host Delaware Tech for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon at Steve Bazarnic Field.
