Accountant scratches lottery ticket in Virginia store — then saw ‘a lot of zeros’

An accountant didn’t get a break from crunching numbers when he stopped at a grocery store in Virginia and bought a lottery ticket.

Augustus Alvarez saw a hefty prize amount after scratching his 10X The Money ticket — $100,000, to be exact, according to lottery officials.

“I saw a lot of zeros,” Alvarez told lottery officials. “I’m still in shock.”

The Alexandria resident bought his lucky ticket at the Giant Food on Kingstowne Boulevard and scratched the ticket in the store, according to a Dec. 2 news release.

Alvarez won the top prize in the game against 1-in-1,713,600 odds, according to the Virginia Lottery.

The accountant couldn’t sleep the night before picking up his prize, he told lottery officials.

Alvarez said he may buy a new car with the winnings.
