Abilene Cowboys clinch NCKL title with dominant win over Chapman Irish

Feb. 22—Despite one game remaining, the Abilene Cowboys clinched the outright NCKL title on Tuesday night with a dominating 72-36 victory over the visiting Chapman Irish. It was relatively speaking a complete game for Abilene as an intense defense, and a balanced offensive scoring attack propelled the Cowboys to the running clock victory.

Abilene would lead after the opening quarter 19-7 as Brax Fisher, Stocton Timbrook, and Tyler Holloway would all score multiple baskets.

A dominant second quarter performance would see the Cowboys score 30 points in the quarter as six different players would score. A pair of Keaton Hargrave baskets and another basket by both Timbrook and Holloway would push the lead to 28-7 before the Irish would score their first basket of the quarter at the 4:55 mark. Timbrook would then lead Abilene in scoring with seven of the next 12 points through the next three minutes to lead 40-14. A final 7-2 scoring run capped off by a Zach Miller three pointer at the buzzer would give the Cowboys a commanding 49-16 halftime lead of 33 points.

Chapman would not be able to close the scoring gap in the third quarter as both teams remained nearly equal at 18, and 17 points a piece. Made three pointers would be the story for both teams as Brax Fisher would deliver back to back baskets, along with Hargrave and Ian Crump. In all 12 of Abilene's 18 points in the quarter would come from behind the arch, giving them a 67-33 lead after three quarters.

With a lead over thirty points, a running clock would be set in motion the remainder of the game. Both teams would see their lowest scoring output of the game as reserve players for both teams played a majority of the final quarter. The Cowboys would out score Chapman 5-3 in the quarter to finalize the 72-36 score.

Abilene would have eight players score in the game including three in double figures as Fisher had 21 points, Timbrook had 18 points, and Holloway had 11 points.

Chapman would receive a great effort from Kelan Gruver as he finished the game with 21 points for the Irish.

Abilene now 16-3 overall, and 9-0 in the NCKL will next finish the regular season against Clay Center at home on Thursday night.
