Aaron Rodgers says he had a setback with his knee when he got hit last week

Even when Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers performed some magic in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, it should have been clear that his knee injury would linger a while.

It’s mid-October, and Rodgers said the injury got worse last week.

Rodgers said he took a hit from Detroit Lions linebacker Christian Jones last Sunday and suffered what he said was a setback to his knee, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported.

There’s no indication Rodgers is in any danger of not playing Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers, but he might need to back to the larger brace to protect his knee, Demovsky wrote.

Aaron Rodgers said he hopes to practice Friday

Rodgers is hoping to avoid the large brace he wore between the injury in the season opener and last week at Detroit. He wore a smaller brace last week, and suffered the setback. But he still hopes he doesn’t need to wear the larger brace, according to Demovsky.

“I hope not,” Rodgers said. “The goal would be to wear the same brace I wore last week, but I have a lot of faith in our training staff and we’re going to [use] the brace we feel is most safe and allowing me to do exactly what I’m able to do on Monday.”

Rodgers didn’t practice Thursday, the first practice of the week in advance of the Packers’ Monday night game. Rodgers has missed the first full-pads practice of the week each week since the injury. He has practiced on the second day of full-pads practices the past two weeks, Demovsky said. Rodgers said he hopes to practice on Friday and “be good to go — hopefully back to where I was in Detroit.”

Rodgers has been playing hurt

While this latest setback doesn’t appear to be a terrible one, considering Rodgers never came out of last week’s game and rallied the Packers in the second half, only to see kicker Mason Crosby melt down in a loss, it is a reminder that Rodgers isn’t fully healthy.

Rodgers has been playing hurt, and while he hasn’t been bad, he hasn’t looked like his usual self for most of the season either. The injury was supposed to take weeks to heal, and a setback after four weeks isn’t the best scenario.

Rodgers will presumably be playing Monday night against the 49ers, and he’ll still make a handful of plays that nobody else can. But he hasn’t been 100 percent since the first half of the first game of the season, and it’s unclear when he might get there.
