7 realistic OC candidates the Eagles can target after parting ways with Brian Johnson

After a late-season meltdown that saw the Eagles go 1-6 in their final seven games, including the playoffs, the head coach is on the hot seat, and his assistant coaches are all expected to depart.

Philadelphia’s third-year head coach has far exceeded expectations, but it’s clear that Johnson Gannon and Shane Steichen played far more significant roles than we thought.

The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane reports that offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, 36, won’t return after one season as the player-caller that saw him oversee the NFL’s No. 8-ranked unit but struggling to get consistent results during a late-season slide that included a blowout playoff loss to the Buccaneers.

Johnson recently interviewed for two different head coaching jobs — with the Falcons and Titans — but is expected to leave the Eagles regardless, per Derrick Gunn, likely landing “elsewhere in some offensive capacity.”

With things starting to heat up, we’re looking at seven realistic options for an offensive coordinator.

Kubiak, the son of Super Bowl-winning coach Gary Kubiak, previously served as an offensive coordinator for the Vikings in 2021, so he’s an experienced play caller. He previously served as quarterbacks coach under Mike Zimmer and then-offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski in Minnesota.

Kubiak has grown up in coaching with a heavy outside zone/West Coast influence.

Kubiak, who spent one season as QB coach under Nathaniel Hackett in Denver, has spent this season as the 49ers passing game coordinator. Kubiak worked with Kirk Cousins in Minnesota from 2019-21, and he’s now working with Brock Purdy in San Francisco.

Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy

Bieniemy left the Chiefs last offseason to get out from under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes’ shadow and give himself a better chance at becoming a head coach.

During his his five years in Kansas City, the Chiefs finished as the NFL’s top total offense three times.

Bieniemy’s scheme combines traditional West Coast elements with the college air raid offenses, and he could take it to another level with Jalen Hurts.

Zac Robinson | Rams passing-game coordinator/QB coach

Another coach off the Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan school of thought, Robinson, might be the perfect candidate.  He has been the Los Angeles Rams’ passing-game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the last two years.

Robinson’s scheme could include heavy three-receiver sets, condensed formations, outside zone/duo sequencing with play-action, motion at the snap, and the drop-back pass game.

A star and National Championship quarterback at Tennessee, Martin has only been in the NFL for three seasons, but has nearly 20 years of coaching experience in the collegiate ranks. Martin has coached quarterbacks and wide receivers, taking over as the Ravens QBs coach this past season. His experience working in Greg Roman and Todd Monken’s offense built around star QB Lamar Jackson could be intriguing to Eagles star, Jalen Hurts.

Martin could bring Baltimore’s designed quarterback run game with the spread formations and more advanced passing system that Monken runs to pair with elite pass catchers on the outside.

Liam Coen | Kentucky offensive coordinator

The Rhode Island native played quarterback at UMass from 2004 to 2008 where he with Victor Cruz before beginning his coaching career in 2010 as an assistant at Brown.

Coen started coaching at small colleges throughout New England before McVay plucked him away from Maine (where he was the offensive coordinator) to be the Rams’ assistant wide receivers coach.

After three years in L.A., Coen returned to the college game, where he helped turn Will Levis into a second-round pick.

Coen spent 2022 as McVay’s offensive coordinator before returning to Kentucky last season.

Darrell Bevell | Dolphins quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator

Bevell was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks when they won the Super.

Bevell has worked with Brett Favre, Brad Johnson, Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford, Trevor Lawrence,, and Tua Tagovailoa. Under coach Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins have the best passing offense and second-best scoring offense this season.

Bevell’s best seasons as an offensive coordinator were with the 2009 Vikings (fifth in yards, second in scoring) and 2015 Seahawks (fourth in yards and scoring).

The 40-year-old Caley was in New England from 2015-2022, mainly working with tight ends. Caley interviewed for the Patriots offensive coordinator job last season.

He also interviewed with the Texans and Jets last offseason for their offensive coordinator jobs. After spending a season with Sean McVay in Los Angeles, Caley could bring some innovation to the Eagles offense.
