On Tuesday, the 49ers waived the rookie from Illinois after veteran Robbie Gould returned to action this weekend after missing three games with a right quadriceps injury.
McLaughlin's one miss with the 49ers left a mark. He badly mishit a 47-yard field-goal attempt in overtime that would have kept the 49ers unbeaten in Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks. His crucial miss came after he connected on a 47-yarder with :01 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
After McLaughlin missed in overtime, the Seahawks scored the winning points on Jake Myers' 42-yard field goal to supply Seattle with a crucial 27-24 victory. The Seahawks currently hold the No. 1 spot in the NFC West because of the head-to-head victory. The 49ers and Seattle are both 10-2 with four games remaining on the season.
In addition to making seven of his eight field-goal attempts, McLaughlin also was good on all eight of his extra points.
Gould has struggled this season, hitting just 14 of his 22 field-goal attempts. He had a 51-yard attempt partially blocked in the 49ers' 20-17 loss on Sunday to the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers now have an open spot on the team's 53-man roster. It is undetermined how the 49ers plan to fill their roster.
The team made a couple of moves on their practice squad, signed wide receiver Chris Thompson and releasing offensive lineman Will Holden. Thompson, 25, appeared in 13 games with the Houston Texans as an undrafted rookie n 2017 from Florida. He averaged 6.5 yards on six punt returns and 21.7 on 17 kickoff returns. He also caught five passes for 84 yards.
