Pettis' first-ever kickoff return results in fumble, injury originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

If Dante Pettis' time with the 49ers soon comes to an end, he went out the way most of his tenure with the 49ers has been: A disaster.

Midway through the third quarter of the 49ers' game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Pettis fielded his first-career kickoff and fumbled when he was tackled. The Seahawks recovered and would score a touchdown six plays later to take a 27-7 lead.

To add salt to the wound, Pettis injured his shoulder on the play and was deemed questionable to return to the game.

Pettis, who hasn't lived up to the hype of being a second-round draft pick, has been the subject of trade speculation for the last few weeks. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan even admitted to the media that the team has made and received calls on the former Washington Huskie.

The botched kickoff return had 49ers Twitter calling for the immediate end to Pettis' 49ers career, whether he's cut or traded before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday.

In 28 games over three seasons, Pettis has just 38 receptions for 576 yards and seven touchdowns.

It's clear 49ers management is ready to move on from Pettis. If they can't find a trade partner for him over the next two days, they might just have to cut their losses and move on from the 25-year-old.

If this is the end for Pettis, it was a fitting way to go out.
