49ers' Williams heartbroken over Bosa's likely ACL tear originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
The veteran left tackle used the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year to “knock the rust off” after Williams had spent more than a year off the field. Throughout the process, Williams and Bosa challenged each other and grew close.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Williams said. “Nick is a cornerstone on this team. He’s part of the nucleus. Not only that, he’s a shining star on the field. He has a bright future ahead of him.”
Several 49ers players left the game with injuries, along with Bosa. These ailments partially could be due to the newly installed turf at MetLife Stadium, which Williams called “tricky” to play on. While injuries are a part of the game, Williams' mood was somber after the game.
“It sucks, man,” Williams said. “This is the part of the game that nobody likes nobody wants to talk about. Nobody likes to see those things happen, especially to premiere player like Nick.”
If Bosa indeed tore his ACL, it will be the second time he will go through the rehabilitation process. The star edge rusher suffered the same injury to his right knee in October 2015, ending his high school career at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Bosa went on to become a stand out player at Ohio State, never having complications from the injury. Success in his college career led to him being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft by the 49ers.
While Williams was somber discussing Bosa’s injury, he did have a positive spin about the mettle of his teammate.
“If anyone can come from this and be better, it will be him,” Williams said. “I’ve got all the faith in the world that he’ll be back next year, better than ever. Good thing about it is he’s been through one of these before.
“He’s about as hard a worker as you’re going to find. So I know that he will overcome adversity and still be that player we expect him to be.”
The 49ers will await further testing on Bosa's knee before making an official announcement, which likely will occur early in the week.
