49ers slated to earn 2 compensatory picks in 2022

The 49ers didn’t have many substantial departures in free agency this year, and they retained all of their key free agents. They still are slated to earn a pair of compensatory picks next year according to Over the Cap.

OTC laid out projected comp picks for next year’s draft, and San Francisco will get two seventh-round selections. They’ll get one for Solomon Thomas signing with the Raiders, and another with Kerry Hyder leaving to join the Seahawks. The league issues up to 32 comp picks per year, which caused CJ Beathard to be left off for San Francisco, although he would’ve fetched them another seventh-round pick.

Those compensatory choices don’t include the ones awarded for a minority assistant coach or front-office member getting hired to a head coach or general manager position. Head-coach hires earn two comp picks. GM hires earn one.

San Francisco was awarded two compensatory third-round picks when Robert Saleh was hired as the New York Jets head coach. They got another when former VP of player personnel Martin Mayhew was hired as the Washington Football Team GM. Those picks will be distributed across three years starting in 2021. They used their first comp pick on cornerback Ambry Thomas. Their second one was sent to the Dolphins in the trade up for the No. 3 pick, and their third will convey in 2023.
