49ers activate Reed to play vs. Packers among roster moves originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The 49ers will not have their three top wide receivers available Thursday night to face the Green Bay Packers, but they are getting back a pass-catching tight end.

Veteran Jordan Reed, who missed the past five games with a knee injury, is set to make his return. Reed was activated off injured reserve Thursday afternoon in time to be eligible to play against the Packers.

The 49ers made a flurry of moves on Thursday to compensate for a lineup hit hard by injuries as well as four players -- Kendrick Bourne, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams -- being placed on the NFL's reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday. Those players are unavailable to face the Packers. Samuel had already been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

The 49ers' made the following moves by the 1 p.m. deadline:

Activated from injured reserve: TE Jordan Reed

Elevated from practice squad: OL Tony Bergstrom, RB Austin Walter

COVID-19 replacements: WR River Cracraft, S Johnathan Cyprien, TE Daniel Helm, WR Kevin White

Injured reserve: QB Jimmy Garoppolo, TE George Kittle

Signed to practice squad: DL Josiah Coatney

Released from practice squad: WR Chris Finke

Reed got off to a strong start this season with 11 receptions for 85 and two touchdowns before leaving the 49ers' Week 3 game against the New York Giants with a knee injury. Ross Dwelley is likely to start on Thursday at tight end.

As expected, Garoppolo (ankle) and Kittle (foot) on injured reserve. It is unknown whether either player will return to action this season. Garoppolo could undergo season-ending surgery. With no surgery, he could be back in six weeks. Kittle's injury is expected to keep him out of action for approximately two months.

The 49ers have eight regular-season games remaining. The team takes a 4-4 record into its game against the Packers at Levi's Stadium.
