49ers requesting permission to interview Steve Wilks signals Texans close with DeMeco Ryans

How close are the Houston Texans to hiring DeMeco Ryans as their next coach? Just ask the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the 49ers have requested permission to interview former Carolina Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks for their defensive coordinator opening.

Wilks led the Panthers to a 7-10 finish after Carolina started 1-4 and fired coach Matt Rhule. Wilks, who was the defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach, was promoted to the interim role.

Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair indicated the team would have more clarity on their coaching finalists following the NFC Championship Game. The Philadelphia Eagles dismantled San Francisco 31-7, which led to Ryans having more time to continue his talks with Houston.
