49ers injury update: Jimmy Garoppolo’s status uncertain for Week 3

Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t finish Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium after suffering an ankle injury early in the first quarter. He played the rest of the first half with what head coach Kyle Shanahan called a high ankle sprain. With the 49ers set to play on MetLife Stadium’s poor field turf in Week 3, there’s a chance backup quarterback Nick Mullens starts against the Giants.

Shanahan didn’t rule Garoppolo out just yet though. He said he’d have to see how the quarterback does throughout the week in practice. The good news for San Francisco is they won’t have to travel back to the West Coast. They’re staying at The Greenbrier in West Virginia where Garoppolo will be able to undergo treatment.

Mullens on Sunday played the entire second half and went 8-for-11 for 71 yards and an interception. He last started a game in Week 17 of the 2018 season.
