Shanahan gives injury updates on running backs, Givens, Kinlaw originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The 49ers' running backs took a serious hit in Sunday’s 17-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles

Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Trey Sermon, who took multiple hits to the head on his first NFL carry, is officially in the concussion protocol. The head coach believes that there are no additional neck injuries along with it.

“I was just told the protocol,” Shanahan said. “I haven’t seen him personally, but our trainers just said it was the concussion protocol. It was a scary one though.”

While there is a chance that Sermon could be available to practice and play soon, the news is less positive for JaMycal Hasty, who suffered a high-ankle sprain and will be out for some time. Generally, the prognosis of a high ankle sprain keeps a player off the field for 4-to-6 weeks.

There is better news for Elijah Mitchell, who returned to the game in the fourth quarter after being announced as questionable to return with a shoulder injury. The rookie does have a chance to be available for the team’s Week 3 matchup on Sunday night facing the Green Bay Packers.

The shifty rookie running back has been the lead ball-carrier since Raheem Mostert suffered a knee injury in the early minutes of the club’s Week 1 win in Detroit.

With the availability of Mitchell and Sermon in question, the club is bringing in several running backs for visits including T.J. Yeldon, Duke Johnson and Lamar Miller.
