SANTA CLARA -- Veteran defensive end Dee Ford is expected to miss at least a week of training camp after undergoing a platelet-rich plasma treatment on his knee.

Ford has missed three practices after experiencing tendinitis in his knee. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Ford underwent the treatment on Saturday. Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey underwent a similar treatment late in the offseason program, and has not missed a day of practice during training camp.

"I know we're looking at it day to day, but that usually takes at least a week," Shanahan said. "But it's something that I think will end up helping him. He could've toughed it out and stuff and gone through it like a lot of guys try to do, because guys are trying to make the team and they're trying to get better. But we feel good about where Dee Ford's at, and we wanted to make sure we took care of that so he could be fresh going into the year."

The 49ers acquired Ford in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs in the offseason after Kansas City tagged him as their franchise player. Ford is coming off his best NFL season. The sixth-year pro recorded 13 sacks last season after missing 10 games in 2017 with a back injury.

Shanahan said Ford experienced issues with tendinitis in his knee in the past. There were no previous media reports of Ford experiencing the condition, but Shanahan said the 49ers were well aware of all of Ford's past medical issues at the time he was acquired.

"You get every medical report that they've ever had from their trainers and stuff and that's been on lists and everything, so you hear about all of that," Shanahan said. "But we have a number of guys with stuff like that. I mean, Joe Staley has gone through stuff like that and usually you've got to do something like what we did once in the year, and we thought it would be better to do it sooner than later."
