49ers QB Beathard works to build on win as free agency looms originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

C.J. Beathard returned to work this week with his first opportunity since the middle of the 2018 season to study his performance over a full game and make adjustments.

Beathard took every snap at quarterback in the 49ers’ 20-12 upset victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16 with Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens unavailable due to injuries.

And Beathard will be back as the 49ers’ starter on Sunday in the regular-season finale against the Seattle Seahawks in Glendale, Arizona.

“There's always plays that you wish you had back or you wish you would've done something different and a lot of that is just repetition-type stuff,” Beathard said. “Not a lot of mechanical stuff, all the mechanics stuff is, once the season starts you kind of are what you are a mechanic-wise.

“A lot of it is mental at that point once the season starts and going through progressions and reads and stuff like that.”

Beathard completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 182 yards with three short touchdown passes -- two to fullback Kyle Juszczyk and one to halfback Jeff Wilson Jr. He did not throw an interception.

The 49ers dominated on the ground, rushing for 227 yards on 30 attempts.

“The run game was working so well, the defense was playing so well, I felt like I didn't have to do much, which was nice,” Beathard said. “We didn't throw it a bunch of times. That's just the way the game played out.

“I just knew I had to take care of the ball and, and the way the guys were playing, just be smart with the ball, take care of the ball and we'll put ourselves in a good position to win the game once the game comes down to the end.”

Beathard will get one final start before he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said this week he would like to bring back each of the 49ers’ quarterbacks in 2021. Mullens is scheduled to be a restricted free agent.

But, for now, Beathard is preoccupied with other matters. He said he has not given his future much thought.

“That's so far ahead,” Beathard said. “I haven't even started thinking about that. You know, I'm really just focused on this game and yeah I’ve got one more this season with these guys.”
