National Signing Day: 4-Star LB Branden Jennings joins Terps originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
As National Signing Day commenced on Wednesday, Maryland's football program received a surprise commitment from 4-star linebacker Branden Jennings.
That late steal for the Terrapins came at the expense of Michigan, which had received a verbal commitment from Jennings.
The 6-foot 3, 225-pound senior from Jacksonville, Fla. is the No. 16 player at his position and No. 109 overall recruit in his class, per 247 Sports' composite recruiting database.
This wasn’t the first time the Sandalwood High School senior flipped his commitment. In October, Jennings, whose father, Bradley, played on a national championship team at Florida State, renounced his commitment to the Seminoles via Instagram.
“After a lot of thought and consideration I will be reopening my recruiting process," Branden Jennings wrote in October. "When I committed back in February I was still planning on taking a few unofficial visits over the summer. The pandemic hit and prevented me from taking those opportunities. I have to get this right."
A week later, Jennings announced his commitment to Michigan, making him the fourth-highest ranked member of the Wolverine’s 2021 class. But the Wolverines have struggled during this COVID-19-shortened season with a 2-4 record. Games against Maryland, Ohio State and Iowa have been canceled. Jennings stayed in touch with the Terrapins' football staff and flipped his commitment once again. He signed a letter of intent on Wednesday.

So far, Maryland has received national letters of intent from two of its three local 4-star recruits, including Demioun Robinson (DE, Quince Orchard High) and Tommy Akingbesote (DT, Flowers High). They still await a letter of intent from Taizse Johnson, a 4-star defensive tackle from St. John’s College High in DC.
The Terps are currently ranked 19th according to the 24/7 Sports 2021 Composite Team Rankings. The NCAA early signing period ends on Friday.
