The civil case against the driver who fatally struck elite-level cyclist Gwen Inglis ended with a $353 million verdict on Tuesday, December 6, the lawyers representing her husband Michael Inglis announced in a press release.

In June, the driver Ryan Scott Montoya was sentenced to eight years in prison after he struck and killed Gwen Inglis as she was riding in a bike lane on a training ride with her husband. She was 46 years old.

Inglis was the road race national champion in the 45-49 age group. She was a member of the Black Swift/Cycleton Cycling Team, and last raced on April 24, 2021, when she finished eighth in the Pueblo Classic - Steel City Road Race in Pueblo, Colorado.

“There is no amount of money that brings Gwen back. We’d all pay it if there were. But her legacy in part now can be saving other lives,” Attorney Megan Hottman posted in a statement on Instagram. “Part of this verdict is for punitive damages - damages meant to deter others from this conduct.”

Montoya was driving under the influence of narcotics and alcohol when his vehicle drifted into the bike lane and struck Inglis from behind, catapulting her and her bike 20 feet. He had previously been convicted of a DUI in 2014 and had been charged with a second DUI just 10 days before he killed Inglis.

"No amount can bring back Gwennie, but 350 million is a tribute to Gwen's amazing character,” Inglis’ husband Michael Inglis said in a statement.
