Steeler Nation got the news today that longtime starting center Maurkice Pouncey Is retiring after 11 seasons. This is a huge blow to the franchise on many levels. Let’s talk about the three most immediate things this announcement could mean to the Steelers.

Salary cap relief

By retiring, Pouncey will save $8 million against the salary cap for 2021. Pittsburgh is very cash strapped heading into the offseason and while it hurts to lose Pouncey, the Steelers are very much about every spare dollar.

Shuffles the Steelers NFL draft goals

The offensive line remains a top need for the Steelers in the upcoming draft but this move really elevates center up the rankings. There are a couple of truly elite center prospects in this draft and given the Steeler success at the position, don't be shocked if they take one.

The career of Pouncey has always been linked to that of Ben Roethlisberger. Best friends, both guys always said their careers would last as long as the other. Will this announcement be followed soon by one from Roethlisberger saying he's ending his career as well?
