3 incredible stories about new Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Just by evaluating the basics of new Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick's career, it would be fair to label him the "most interesting man in the NFL."

These 16 seasons and now nine different teams make him the epitome of a journeyman. A degree from Harvard and a 48/50 on the Wonderlic test make him somewhat of a genius. Stop there and Fitzpatrick's aura is already incredibly intriguing.

Yet, there is so much more to the veteran quarterback. Along his path that led him to Washington, he's compiled quite the list of stories, moments, quotes and much more. Here's a look at three that will only make you a bigger fan of Washington's newest passer.

The origin -- and battle -- over "FitzMagic"

Many know Fitzpatrick by his nickname, "FitzMagic." It's one of the most well-known in the league and quite catchy. The moniker also perfectly embodies who he is as a player, given that he has a habit of making one go "how did he just do that?"

The origin of the nickname is somewhat hard to track down, but legend has it that it came to be in 2011 when he was a member of the Buffalo Bills. The team got off to a hot start to the season behind his strong play, leading some of his teammates to label him "FitzMagic." A nickname that smooth is sure to stick.

As he continued to bounce around the league and create more memorable moments, the nickname became more prevalent. It had a major resurgence in 2018 when the full "FitzMagic" was on display with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, he's sometimes referred to by the nickname more than his real name.

That's interesting on its own, but what really takes "FitzMagic" to the next level is the fact that there was a legal battle over the name. Yes, that sentence is real.

It turns out that now-Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick also claimed the nickname, as he had been called it since his high school days. He wanted to trademark the name to sell apparel, but the United States Patent and Trademark Office denied the request. The reason?

The nickname was largely associated with Ryan Fitzpatrick, to the point where it was determined that FitzMagic was more suited for the quarterback rather than the safety. Simply, more people thought of Ryan than Minkah when hearing the nickname "FitzMagic." Therefore no trademark was given as it would too closely associate someone else.

Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't do anything to bring on -- or win -- this legal battle, and that only makes the whole situation even more impressive. Without even trying, the quarterback has established a brand. He is "FitzMagic."

A man of many outfits

When it comes to postgame style, the likes of Cam Newton and others typically steal the show. However, Fitzpatrick's fashion game shouldn't be overlooked.

In 2020 after a win over the Jaguars, the quarterback broke out a pineapple-themed shirt that the internet immediately fell in love with.

However, most remember another time Fitzpatrick wowed with his clothes. After an upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018 with the Buccaneers, Fitzpatrick took the podium rocking a jumpsuit and shades reminiscent of Conor McGregor.

The outfit was actually inspired by teammate DeSean Jackson, as Fitzpatrick borrowed his clothes. Not only is that awesome, but it is just one of the many examples of how well the quarterback gets along with his teammates. Throughout his career, he's been a guy in the locker room that everyone rallies around and enjoys rooting for.

Expect more of the same in Washington, and hopefully, the unbuttoned shirts follow as well.

He just really loves bleeping football

Part of what makes Fitzpatrick so special is his passion and love for the game. To play for 16 years and eight teams alone shows how much football means to him, but what he's gone through is even more evidence.

The starting role has not always been his, and benchings, random spots starts and replacements have been common for Fitzpatrick. Still, he's never buried his head or backed down from a challenge. He's also made sure to support whoever is under center no matter how bad he wants it to be him.

Yet the truest display of how much football means to him could come from this hilarious story ESPN's Jenna Laine shared in 2018.

Trailing by 20 early against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fitzpatrick -- a Buccaneer at the time -- could have let his rage consume him. However, even at a low moment, he still made sure to take it all in and let everyone know how much he loves each and every aspect of the game.

For reference, Fitzpatrick nearly led Tampa Bay to an epic comeback later in the game. There is no questioning his passion for football.
