3 Beavers score 1st goals in road win over Ferris State

Jan. 5—BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Three Bemidji State men's hockey players picked a good time to score their first career goals.

The Beavers entered their first road series of 2024 undermanned. BSU is without injured Kyle Looft, Liam Engström and Jackson Jutting for this road trip, along with

Eric Pohlkamp and Kasper Magnussen,

who haven't returned from the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden. BSU got contributions from unlikely sources to beat Ferris State 4-1.

Freshman Rhys Chiddenton's first collegiate goal kicked off the scoring 12:14 into the first period. He buried a rebound chance off a shot from Lleyton Roed.

Roed assisted on the Beavers' second goal in the opening frame. He forced a turnover behind the Bulldogs' net before dishing a one-time pass to Kirklan Irey in the slot, who doubled the lead.

BSU saw another first-time scorer in the second period. Junior Donte Lawson ripped home a shot on an odd-man rush to give Bemidji State a three-goal cushion. Junior Tony Follmer's empty-netter with 2:217 left was his first goal in 84 games with the Beavers.

Mattias Sholl made 24 saves to earn his fourth win this season. He backstopped BSU to a third consecutive CCHA win with a series of highlight reel saves.

Bemidji State improved to 9-12-0 and 8-5-0 in league play. The Beavers sit alone in first place with 25 points. Ferris State (5-14-1, 3-9-0) sits in last place with eight points.
