2023 NCAA First Four Recap: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi wins first NCAA Tourney game

8:05 p.m. — The Islanders hang on for a 75-71 victory to move on to play top-seeded Alabama on Thursday.

7:57 p.m. — Redhawks answer in seven seconds with a layup by Phillip Russell, SEMO's quick guard that can finish. Redhawks timeout as they've pulled within 72-71.

7:55 p.m. — Islanders call a play for Trey Tennyson, who the Redhawks lag off defensively and he hits a scooping layup for a 72-69 lead with 22.1 seconds to play. Timeout Steve Lutz. It's tight in Dayton.

7:50 p.m. — Southeast Missouri is back within one, 67-66 after a pair of free throws Russell. The game is inside two minutes. The Redhawks have had two players foul out.

7:47 p.m. — Jalen Jackson has give the Islanders the lead back, 66-64 with a pair of free throws.

7:44 p.m. — SEMO has pulled even at 64 with 3:07 to go. The Redhawks have completely erased the Islanders 10-point second half lead. Steve Lutz calls a timeout.

7:35 p.m. — Trey Tennyson hits a second-chance 3 after an offensive rebound for the Islanders and SEMO answers with a 3 of its own.

7:31 p.m. — Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Trey Tennyson hits a 3-pointer as the defense lags off him, due to shooting struggles tonight. SE Missouri responds with a triple on the other end and Islanders lead is 58-52 with 6:10 left.

7:27 p.m. — De'Lazarus Keys is the first Islander to pick up his fourth personal foul and Southeast Missouri will go to the line in the bonus. Islanders holding a 53-45 edge with 8:20 to play.

7:20 p.m. — Islanders force consecutive turnovers to build the lead back to eight points, including a breakaway layup from Trey Tennyson, who they have been trying to get going all night. Lead has been built back to 51-43 at the midway point of the second half.

7:14 p.m. — Feels like SEMo is starting to get in a groove shooting the ball. They have been erratic for the first 25-28 minutes of the game. Redhawks have pulled a nine point game within 45-43 mid 2nd half.

7:07 p.m. — The well-positioned Mushila has drawn a couple of fouls on the Redhawks on the last few possessions and the Islanders are again in the bonus early in the half. There could be a few free throws down the stretch for A&M-Corpus Christi.

7:02 p.m. — Much needed sequence for the Islanders. Ross Williams with his second triple of the night and then Redhawks turn the ball over in transition. Islanders maintain a 38-32 edge 15:38 2H. Two Islanders with three fouls, including Jackson and Laz Keys. Keys picked up a foul after things got physical and heated and the officials whistled a double foul.

6:58 p.m. — Jalen Jackson picks up his third foul after turning the ball over and scrambling for the ball. De'Lazarus Keys also with three fouls before the first media timeout of the second half. He has been big on the glass for the Islanders.

6:53 p.m. — The Islanders try to get Trevian Tennyson going, but he is well guarded and his 3 misses. Then the Redhawks force a held ball. Ross Williams comes in for Tennyson early in the second half. SE Missouri has trimmed the deficit to 33-30 on a 3-pointer.

6:47 p.m. — The Islanders have a six-point edge despite Trey Tennyson being held to 2 points in the first half. Isaac Mushila has 9 to lead A&M-CC. Keys has 7 and Fryer has 6.

6:31 p.m. — Islanders lead at the half was nearly 10, but they will settle for a six-point advantage as SE Missouri battled for an offensive put back late in the first half.

6:26 p.m. — Simeon Fryer bringing the ball up the floor while Jackson sits. Islanders seem to have gotten the upper hand on the glass tonight, but 3-point shooting has kept SEMO in shouting distance. A&M-Corpus Christi with a 33-25 lead in the final minute of the first half.

6:21 p.m. — Jalen Jackson has picked up his second foul late in the first half. Ross Williams is coming in. We will see how the team fares as he sits. The Islanders lead 30-25 with 2:44 left in the first half.

6:11 p.m. — Islanders have done what they do and gotten to the line. They are in the double bonus for the last seven-plus minutes of the first half.

6:05 p.m. — Jourdyn Grandberry gives Jalen Jackson a breather. The freshman was going to see more minutes with the injury to Terrion Murdix. After the Redhawks took their first lead of the game, the Islanders have answered and gone back in front 22-18 with less than 8 minutes until half.

5:55 p.m. — Simeon Fryer tries to posterize a Southeast Missouri defender and draws the foul. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is now in the bonus for the final 12:48 of the first half, owning a 17-13 lead on the Redhawks.

5:48 p.m. — Ross Williams is the first sub for the Islanders tonight, who lead 8-5 early and have drawn four fouls before the first media timeout.

5:44 p.m. — The game is being called tight early. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is a better free throw shooting team statistically. We'll see how that impacts the game. Islanders lead 6-0 early.

5:41 p.m. — SE Mo opens with a turnover and De'Lazarus Keys with a put back as the Islanders open the game with the lead.

5:36 p.m. — The lights have dimmed and pregame is under way. The 2023 NCAA Tournament is about to start. The eyes of the country are upon Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and SE Missouri.

5:28 p.m. — Earlier Tuesday Texas A&M-Corpus Christi announced that Adrian Rodriguez has been named the permanent Athletic Director after holding the interim title since Jon Palumbo left for a similar position at Georgia Tech.

5:20 p.m. — No surprise as the starting lineups are announced and Simeon Fryer will start in place of injured Terrion Murdix. Murdix had started 32 of 33 games this season. The rest of the five are regulars: Trevian Tennyson, Jalen Jackson, Isaac Mushila and De'Lazarus Keys. SE Missouri will go with Israel Barnes, Phillip Russell, Chris Harris, Nate Johnson and Dylan Branson.

5:10 p.m. — Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is on the floor getting loose as there is less than 30 minutes until tipoff against Southeast Missouri State in Dayton. Islanders are the higher seed and wearing white uniforms tonight.
