Semifinals are set after a wild Day 2

The Mountain West tournament is awesome and proved that on the second day which featured a near upset of the top seed, San Jose State getting its 20th win for just the third time in school history and first since the 1980-81 season, a Utah State blowout, and Boise State taking care of host UNLV.

In case you missed any of the games, below are highlights of Day 2 action and a blurb of each game.

March 9 Quarterfinals

Game 4: No. 1 San Diego State 64, No. 8 Colorado State 61

Isaiah Stephens did all he could to pull off the upset over national ranked San Diego State but the final shots would not just fall. His 16 points and eight assists were not enough to get the win.

The Aztecs continue their march toward appearing in their sixth-straight conference championship game with this win, and if they do cut down the nets in Vegas it will be their third tourney title since 2018.

Game 5: No. 5 San Jose State 81, No. 4 Nevada 77 (OT)

All hail Tim Miles. He is a master coach and turned around a San Jose State that has so many struggles with transfers and coaches rotating seemingly every five mintues.

This win gave San Jose State its first 20-win season in over 40 years back during the 1980-81 season. They took Nevada to overtime and ultimately endured get one of the most important wins in program history.

This victory for the Spartans was its first ever Mountain West tournament win. It also should be noted that the Wolf Pack won prior two games with easy by a combined 42 points.

Game 6: No. 2 Boise State 87, No. 7 UNLV 76

There is always a concern that the host team in UNLV has an unfair advantage and advances maybe a game or two further than their seed suggests.

This Rebel team slipped through the year and were a seven seed for a reason.

In this game it started off like it would end up being a Boise State blow out as the Broncos were hot from the field. They made 10 of their first 14 three-pointers and had 50 points in the first 20 minutes.

UNLV then came back to make this game close and get it to overtime. This was the Rebels third-straight overtime game and it caught up to them as they scored only three points in the extra frame.

Game 7: No. 3 Utah State 91, No. 6 New Mexico 76

So much for New Mexico making a case for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. The Lobos were no match for the Aggies as they were down by 11 at the half and no chance for a comeback.

The big story was Utah State’s Taylor Funk who scored 32 points, including 6 of 10 from beyond the ard, to lead the Aggies to a win which likely supplanted Utah State as an NCAA Tournament team.

Steven Ashworth scored 22 points and added five assists and three steals in the win.
