The 2023 college rosters include more than 90 former area high school athletes
More than 90 former area high school athletic standouts are competing at the next level this fall.
These athletes were listed on the rosters for athletic websites for colleges in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri.
The fall sports center around football, golf, tennis volleyball, cross country and soccer but also include cheerleading, powerlifting and equestrian. Some swimming and diving athletes are listed since their seasons start in the fall and continue through the winter.
Some area athletes to keep an eye on this fall include Blake Holden, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound junior defensive lineman from Watertown who is started for the University of South Dakota,. The Coyotes are off to a 2-1 start.
Dakota Wesleyan's football team definitely has some area flavor with three former Watertown athletes (Adam DeJong, Hunter Cordell and Kale Stevenson) all starting in the defensive backfield and Ethan McCune of De Smet starting at defensive end for a team that is off to a 3-1 start. DeJong earned NAIA All-American honors as a safety last fall. Another Watertown grad, Cole Holden, is a starting wide receiver for DWU.
On the volleyball court, former Watertown standout Sophie Tietz is a senior starting right side hitter for the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks. She currently leads the team with 97 kills in the Mavs' first 10 matches.
On the golf course, junior Kelsey Heath of Sisseton is a leader for the Mount Marty women's team. She recently earned All-Great Plains Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week honors.
Lists of athletes competing in winter and spring sports will be published later in the school year. If we're missing somebody, email: rmerriam@thepublicopinion.com and will add them to the list.
