The hero on a spectacular night at Qatar, Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is just as motivated before he takes on Bangladesh and Afghanistan in their next set of 2022 World Cup qualifier ties.
The custodian was asked if the incredible show against the reigning Asian champions piles the pressure on ahead of what can be considered “must-win” games. Gurpreet maintained that the team will approach the next two games as any other and try to give their best on the field.
“For us, it’s (Bangladesh and Afghanistan) is just a game that we need to make sure we perform to our levels and give our everything. And the result will take care of itself.
“We can’t think about going in and already finalising the event before it happens. We just need to make sure that we are ready and perform to the best of our abilities,” he told Goal.
The Bengaluru FC keeper also spoke about how the club will prioritise the AFC Cup as they attempt to better their previous record of reaching the final in 2016.
“Asian football (AFC Cup) is a top priority for us as a club. We would make sure we will perform up to the levels again, try to reach the final and make India proud,” he said.
Gurpreet also had positive things to say about the Star Sport Select initiative that brought together Premier League fans in Bengaluru under one roof for a screening of the Chelsea v Liverpool game.
“I think it’s a very good initiative. As they said, it has been happening for the fourth time in Bangalore. It happens in other cities as well. Kudos to Star for organising this. It’s very important to promote the culture of sports, and football because it’s personally great for me.
“It’s always great to see the fans filling in, especially the Bengaluru FC fans. It is very important for us to have the Indian football connection. It’s very important to make sure that the people who love the Premier League or European football also get to know about their home-grown talents and home-grown teams. I just want to thank Star Sports for organising this,” he concluded.
