2022 NFL mock draft: Bills use first rounder on CB

While the Buffalo Bills will get back to football this upcoming weekend after their bye, it’s still always mock draft season.

Proving that to be true, Pro Football Focus recently released first-round projections for the 2022 NFL draft in a mock.

Regrading the Bills (4-2), we have one curious note and one that’s less surprising.

In their Round 1 guesses for the upcoming draft, PFF has the Bills selecting cornerback Trent McDuffie from Washington. That position isn’t too shocking.

At the 2021 draft, some were surprised the Bills didn’t address the position in the second round. Instead, Round 2 saw Buffalo take Boogie Basham, another pass rusher after Greg Rousseau was taken in Round 1.

But now the interesting aspect: The Bills get McDuffie… at pick No. 22? It looks like PFF isn’t very high on Buffalo the rest of this season.

On the pick, here was PFF’s breakdown:

22. BUFFALO BILLS: CB TRENT MCDUFFIE, WASHINGTON
Record: 4-2
Strength of Schedule: .378
PFF Rank: 2nd
Remaining Schedule: 2nd

We all thought the Bills were going to attack their CB2 spot last offseason in the draft, and it didn’t happen. Instead, they decided to double-dip on pass rushing. It has proven to be a great choice so far, but you can certainly see them using 2022 resources on a corner. McDuffie plays on a bad Washington team, so he won’t get a ton of national publicity during the season, but just wait until people get to his tape. He’s a feisty outside corner with really nice instincts. Taller corners in this class might force his name down a bit just because he is shorter than 6 feet, but he has still shown first-round ability.

Focusing on McDuffie, addressing cornerback seems like a possibility for the Bills. Currently at the No. 2 cornerback spot, Levi Wallace is starting.

As we’ve seen before, Wallace has been up and down in 2021.

It would not be surprising to see the Bills looking for some consistency there moving forward. Especially considering Dane Jackson did not prove to be much competition for Wallace this offseason.

Perhaps after the 2021 season, PFF will be right with the McDuffie-Bills connection.

Most will hope it’s with pick No. 32, not 22.
