Why 49ers selected 'lockdown' corner Womack in fifth round originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The 49ers will have a new full-time nickel back this season.

After veteran K'Waun Williams signed with the Denver Broncos as an unrestricted free agent, the 49ers have will a different look in their third-down packages.

Toledo cornerback Sam Womack has a chance to work his way into that role. The 49ers selected Womack in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday with the No. 172 overall pick.

Womack faces an uphill climb to get on the field as a rookie. The 49ers already have three players on their roster with experience lining up against the slot receiver: Darqueze Dennard, Deommodore Lenoir and Dontae Johnson.

The 49ers held Womack in high regard after he led the MAC in pass breakups for three consecutive seasons. He had 45 breakups and five interceptions in his career.

Womack said he considers himself a physical, lock-down corner who can get to the close to the line of scrimmage and throw off the timing between quarterback and receiver.
