2022 NFL Draft: Top three team fits for Jahan Dotson
As we continue through the draft process, we take a look at the current Penn State prospects, many of which could hear their name called early. One player that has been in the first round conversation is wide receiver Jahan Dotson.
Dotson has made substantial leaps over the past two seasons for Penn State. His skills would help several NFL teams and he could hear his name called as early as the first round.
Let’s take a look at the top three fits for Dotson and which teams he would make an immediate impact on.
Los Angeles Chargers

This one makes a ton of sense, especially because it is very possible the Chargers will lose Mike Williams in free agency. The Chargers recently signed Keenan Allen to an extension, but the rest of the wide receiver room is very uncertain. They do have Jalen Guyton and Josh Palmer, who have shown flashes. Both have been somewhat productive this season, but, neither have really been consistent enough to be a reliable second option for Justin Herbert.
Dotson would come in and likely be that second receiver for Dotson. With a young, up-and-coming quarterback in Herbert and a veteran receiver next to him in Allen, that is the perfect situation for Dotson to be in. He has shown he can be a number one option, but Dotson will really flourish next to a veteran, and the Chargers would be a perfect fit for him.
New England Patriots

This is very likely the best option where Dotson can show off his talents to be a true number one option for Mac Jones. The Patriots don’t have a reliable weapon in their receiver room. All of them are nice second or third options, but neither have shown that they can be a true top receiver for their offense.
The Patriots need more speed in their wide receiver room and that is exactly what Dotson provides. Dotson has also expanded his route tree this past season with Penn State, which will help the Patriots immensely on their offense.
Dotson has shown he is capable of being a number one option, and the Patriots would be a good situation for him to do so.

This last team makes sense and it is also an interesting one. First, we don’t know the future of Tom Brady. Second, the Buccaneers could likely be losing Chris Godwin in free agency. However, he did just tear his ACL late in the season. So, it will be interesting to see what teams will value him at because his season-ending ACL tear was late in the year. It would not be too surprising to see Tampa Bay bring him back because of that.
However, if they do lose Godwin, why not replace him with another former Penn State wide receiver? The Buccaneers already locked in Mike Evans for their future, but there are a good amount of unproven receivers outside of him.
If Brady stays, that puts Dotson in a perfect situation to succeed in his first year alongside Evans and a first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback to catch passes from.
If Brady does decide to retire, that gets interesting for the Bucs offense. Do they experiment with Kyle Trask? Do they go after some of the notable names in free agency like Marcus Mariota or Gardner Minshew? Do they trade for Jimmy Garoppolo and have Trask sit another year? Is Trask the successor for Brady?
There are so many questions at the quarterback position if Brady retires after this season. Regardless, the Bucs would have Dotson for their future in a currently unproven wide receiver room with potential.
Dotson can be added to the list of former Penn State wide receivers and will likely hear his name called his name early come April. His talent would help several teams around the league, but the Chargers, Patriots and Buccaneers would be great fits for the former Nittany Lion, who has an immense amount of talent.
