2022 NFL draft: Cam Jurgens scouting report

·3 min read

A former tight end No. 1 recruit from the state of Nebraska, Cam Jurgens enters the 2022 NFL draft as one of this year’s fastest-rising offensive line prospects.

Here is everything you need to know about the Huskers’ big man in the middle:

Vitals

Height: 6-3

Weight: 303

Class: Redshirt Junior

40 time: 4.92

Strengths

Jurgens was the starter at center for every play last year at Nebraska, extending his streak to 18 straight starts at the position. He was one of the top centers in his conference, earning third-team all-conference honors as the anchor of the Huskers’ offensive line. In 414 pass-blocking snaps during the 2021 season, Jurgens allowed zero sacks, and led the fourth-ranked rushing attack in the Big Ten.

As a run blocker, Jurgens possesses excellent athleticism, likely aided by his background as a tight end. He uses that athletic ability well, excelling on move blocks, where he jumps off the snap and zooms into position to cut off defenders. He keeps opponents from diving into the open hole, driving them sideways with his strong base. His speed also shows up in the screen game, as he can quickly burst outside and get to the second level on the move. He gives the ball-carrier a massive lead blocker who can get downfield quickly and bully smaller defenders out of the way, while keeping pace with the runner behind him.

As a pass protector, Jurgens is quick off the snap, getting into position with haste, and giving a nice pop on go. His strong base helps him anchor down, and he has smooth feet that give enough wiggle against both speed and bull rushes. He is a sound, fundamental blocker who will not be easily caught or overwhelmed early in the pass set.

Weaknesses

Jurgens does not have the ideal size or arm length for the NFL, and may be overwhelmed by larger interior defenders who can swamp him off the ball. He may want to kick out to guard as more of a move blocker, or add to his base in the weight room by putting on some quality bulk.

His arm length makes it difficult to recover when he oversets and lunges for blocks. Jurgens was crossed over a few times, and could not swing back and put hands on the defender, which led to a few quarterback hits. He’ll need to be a bit more patient with his blocks, and secure his fundamentals at the next level.

Projection

Jurgens brings tempting athleticism and excellent movement skills to the next level, and teams should be tempted by those physical traits, as well as his solid technique and durability. His move blocking ability should be valued in a variety of run schemes, and he’s sound enough as a pass blocker to start right away, especially if he adds some bulk during the offseason. Teams may be worried about his lacking arm length and overall size, which could limit his draft slot. Even so, expect him to come off the board sometime on Day 2.

Projection: Day 2
