2021 No. 1 recruit Azzi Fudd chooses UConn over Maryland originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
One of the most anticipated recruiting battles in women's basketball came to an end Wednesday.
Azzi Fudd, the nation's No. 1 recruit in the 2021 class and a senior at St. John's College High School in the District, committed to UConn on early signing day. She was also considering Maryland, UCLA and Louisville.
"It was a really hard decision to make once I got down to it," Fudd said on ESPN's Instagram live. "I had the chance to visit some beautiful campuses and build amazing relationships with other schools. "It was really tough, but I know that I want to be somewhere that I'm gonna be proud of the next four years."
Playing St. John's, Fudd was named the 2019 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She averaged 26.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists and became the first sophomore ever to win the award.
Even after tearing her ACL and MCL last year, Fudd's status as a consensus five-star recruit and top player in the country remained.
Last season, UConn was 29-3 and looked poised for another run to the Final Four before the season was suspended. After adding the No. 1 recruit in the 2020 class, Paige Bueckers, the Huskies' future looks bright with Fudd now in the fold.
"I can't wait to play under and for [Gino] Auriemma," Fudd said. "The girls there are amazing and I'm really excited to play with some of my best friends for three or four years and I don't know, I have a feeling we have multiple national championships in our future."
