Speed kills. For all of the glory the Dallas Cowboys have in their offense arsenal, the weaponry really doesn’t include any speed merchants. The group of wide receivers Dallas rolls out on a weekly basis can compete with any group around the NFL and cause nightmares for even the best-built secondaries.
However if there’s one element they can improve on is a lack of deep, mesmerizing speed. What Dallas needs is that guy who forces opposing defensive coordinators to keep his deep safety super deep, uber deep, next county deep. As they didn’t grab a wideout in free agency, they need to do so in next week’s draft. This year’s class is short on, well, height, but it’s not short on game breakers.
CeeDee Lamb is one of the smoothest wideouts out there, and while 4.5 speed is something mere mortals dream of, it’s not ground-breaking for NFL caliber receivers, nor is his game centered around it. Michael Gallup can threaten defenses deep with a 4.51 40 time, but his game is being a contortionist who is tougher than most every defensive back matched up on him. Amari Cooper is very fast and his route-running ability is matched by less than a handful of wideouts throughout the league. He checks in at 4.42.
This crop of draft-eligible receivers do have the requisite speed, and while speed alone doesn’t do the trick, it’s a start and probably the only chess piece not at the discretion of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Any of these guys below can change that.
