2020 Safeway Open Matchups, Placings and First-Round Leader Bets

The 2020 Safeway Open serves as somewhat of an interlude between last week’s Tour Championship and next week’s U.S. Open. Many of the world’s top golfers are taking this week off amid the hectic PGA Tour schedule, leaving us something closer to an alternate field at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the Safeway Open betting odds and lines with tournament matchups, placings and first-round leader picks and best bets.

2020 Safeway Open: Matchup bets

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 1:18 p.m. ET.

Doc Redman vs. Shane Lowry (-106)

Lowry, the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year, is oddly a slight underdog against Redman. Both had their 2019-20 PGA Tour season end with a missed cut at The Northern Trust, but Lowry has the much better resume. He makes his debut at this venue while Redman missed the cut in his first appearance last year.

Si Woo Kim (-125) vs. Phil Mickelson

Kim and Mickelson continue to swap in-and-out of the top spot for the outright tournament betting favorite. Mickelson recently won in his debut on the PGA Tour Champions, while Kim tied for 13th at the PGA Championship and for third at the Wyndham Championship before being eliminated from the FedExCup Playoffs with a T-39 finish at The Northern Trust.

2020 Safeway Open: Placing bets

Top 10: Mark Hubbard (+500)

Hubbard is the top golfer in attendance by the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings at No. 23. He made it to the BMW Championship before being eliminated from the FEC Playoffs with a T-51 result. He has 14 career rounds played at this venue with an average of 0.43 strokes gained per round, according to Data Golf.

Top European: Kristoffer Ventura (+900)

This pool is led by Sergio Garcia (+300) and Lowry (+350), but the two major champions may not be fully devoted to this week’s tournament while preparing for next week’s US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. Ventura, a star on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, is a good bet to break through in a weaker field on the PGA Tour this week.

2020 Safeway Open: First-round leader bet

Harold Varner III (+4000)

Varner finished seventh at the Wyndham Championship after opening with a 62. He broke 70 in all four rounds, but he still slipped down the leaderboard in a much stronger field than what’s in Napa this week. He’s +2500 to win the event and make it his first PGA Tour victory, but he’s a much better play at the higher odds to get off to another strong start.

J.B. Holmes (+7000)

Holmes is playing for the first time since withdrawing from the Workday Charity Open in what was his first event since the PGA Tour returned to play. The five-time PGA Tour winner has surprised after long layoffs in the past.
