Former Vice President Joe Biden has opened a 14-point national lead over Donald Trump with just six days remaining before the final ballots will be cast, according to a new poll by The Independent.

The Democratic presidential challenger remains ahead in the US election race in a number of crucial swing states, with ABC/Washington Post seeing him with major leads of 17 points in Wisconsin and seven in Michigan, two of the states Mr Trump visited yesterday in search of support.

Mr Trump does appear to have pulled back into contention in North Carolina, where he is currently tied with Biden on 48 points each, according to the latest SurveyUSA/WRAL News poll. While the data does represent some movement towards the president in the past two weeks, the state remains a competitive race and is expected to be tight on 3 November.

More than 70m early votes have meanwhile already been cast in this year’s election, more than half the total turnout of the 2016 ballot, with pundits saying the country is on course to beat the record set in 1908.
