The Chicago Bears selected Tulsa edge rusher Trevis Gipson in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft in an effort to add more depth and upside to a pass rush that already received a boost with the signing of Robert Quinn in free agency.
Gipson (6-3, 261) had eight sacks for Tulsa in 2019 and was one of the more impressive players at the 2020 Senior Bowl. He has an explosive first step and uses his length to his advantage when competing against opposing offensive tackles, but he's still a raw player who needs pro coaching in order to reach his maximum upside. Fortunately, he'll learn behind two of the league's premier sack artists in Chicago. This is a high upside selection.
Fans on Twitter shared their thoughts after the pick was announced:
Bears select Trevis Gipson. Very raw but will add much needed depth at DE. Had 8 sacks and 15 TFL last year for Tulsa. Has good size at 6'3. Grades very well athletically. pic.twitter.com/KHbhIXmW6l

They compared Trevis Gipson to Roy Robertson-Harris who is amazing. I feel a lot better

Trevis Gipson sounds like a very raw talent who has the prototypical frame to play the 3-4 OLB spot. I don't think it was worth giving up a fourth rounder next year but hopefully we can gain a comp pick for next year

Bears take Trevis Gipson. In one of my first mock drafts of the year I had Gibson to the Bears. Good power and burst off the edge. Good length and size. Solid edge setter and pass rush. Terrific motor. Bears add depth to an already strong defensive front seven.

Apparently, Ryan Pace really wanted a replacement for Nick Williams. If you look at last season, Williams had to play quite a bit and was very effective. That's the sense I can make from this Trevis Gipson pick. #Bears

Love Love Love Trevis Gipson out of Tulsa.. high upside and quick off the edge.. Bears have been looking for a guy to play opposite of Khalil Mack and I think he may emerge as an option.
