Rothy’s, which is known for its sustainable and fashionable flats, launched sustainable bags made entirely out of recycled plastic on March 3. The brand — which has been worn by Meghan Markle, Mandy Moore, Jessica Biel and Katie Holmes — has never launched a product besides shoes in its history. And the launch is all about redefining sustainability and sticking to low-waste practices.
The bags are knit to shape, meaning they are manufactured with low to no fabric waste. Instead of cutting the plastic-based fabric to fit the bags, the fabric is knit to the bag’s size specifications. The knit pieces are then pieced together like a puzzle to make the bags. Even the stripe corner detail and patterns on the bags are knit to shape, leaving essentially zero waste on the cutting room floor.
The bags are flexible, soft and machine-washable, yet structured and durable. All bags have a bottom insert that can be removed and cleaned separately from the bag. So say bye-bye to those pesky crumbs that somehow collect at the bottom of your handbag.
Though Rothy’s shoes are always created using yarn made of 100% recycled plastic, the yarn used to make the bags is a little different. It’s still made of 100% recycled plastic, but much of the plastic is marine plastic that is cleared from the oceans. To date, Rothy’s has repurposed more than 50 million plastic water bottles to make its shoes.
The bag collection will launch with five silhouettes that are made for “modern life on the go.” Prices range from $65 for a mini cube-like bag to $350 for a structured work handbag. And with the same fabric quality and sustainable practices Rothy’s fans have grown to love, it may well be worth the price. Check out some of the styles below:
