With 17th NFL game official, what does that mean for the Vikings?

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s official: the league has added a 17th game and an 18th week to the NFL regular season.

There have been talks of a 17th game for quite some time, which has led to reports about which additional team the Vikings will face in 2021. According to multiple reports, Minnesota will go to Los Angeles to play the Chargers now that game No. 17 is in effect. This matchup means that the Vikings will play nine road games and eight home games in 2021.

Los Angeles hired Brandon Staley to be its head coach this offseason. Similar to the Vikings, the Chargers are coming off a down year, but the team has promising pieces like QB Justin Herbert, RB Austin Ekeler and DE Joey Bosa.

The Vikings, of course, added some decent players in free agency that should lead to them being more competitive than they were in 2020. But the Chargers are a young and promising team. It should be an interesting matchup. You can see the other opponents the Vikings will be facing here.
