Students walk out after girl reports she was sexually assaulted at Denton Guyer High

Denton police continued on Friday to investigate a report of a 15-year-old girl being sexually assaulted by another student on the campus of Denton Guyer High School last week.

The girl was taken to a local hospital after the alleged assault on Oct. 6.

A 17-year-old boy is accused of sexually assaulting her on the campus, at 7501 Teasley Lane in Denton, according to WFAA-TV.

No one has been arrested in the case as of Friday as the investigation continued.

“Should any charges be filed at the conclusion of the investigation, we would be sure to put out a release given the attention this case has gotten,” according to a statement released Friday by Denton police. “We appreciate your patience and sensitivity to the nature of this case.“

Hundreds of students at the school staged a walkout about 10 a.m. Friday outside of the Denton ISD campus in protest. Parents also gathered to join in the protest and met up with students in front of the school.

Some students carried signs with message including, “Blame Rapists for Rape,” and “We Believe You!”

“We are here to be able to feel safe to go to our school,” one student yelled, according to video of the protest posted by the Denton Record-Chronicle on Twitter.

Other students chanted, “We won’t forget.”

Students also called out the school’s principal for not taking action against a culture of sexual harassment and assault, according to the video.

On Thursday the principal sent an email to parents encouraging students to remain in class, and there was an increased presence of Denton police officers at the campus Friday.

“A key part of Guyer High School’s reputation is built on the accomplishments of our students and staff,” Principal Shaun Perry wrote to parents on Thursday. “How we treat one another, including in person and online, also plays a part in that reputation.”

Teachers would continue to record attendance while school officials monitored the protest, and no outside visitors would be allowed to participate, the principal wrote.

“I have shared the expectations with our faculty and staff, and each of us stand ready to assist our students as we move forward,” Perry wrote. “Our staff works tirelessly to provide the safest possible learning environment that fosters healthy relationships.”

The school is cooperating with the police investigation, the principal said.

“While we cannot comment on the specifics of this police investigation, we want to assure our community that the safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our top priority,” Denton school district spokeswoman Julie Zwahr said in a statement to KXAS-TV.

Crystal Cunningham, whose daughter is a sophomore at Guyer High, told the Denton Record-Chronicle that she and other parents want to see action and hear answers from school officials. She said there’s a pattern of girls being harassed by male classmates.

“There has been zero notice from the school that a sexual assault happened on school grounds,” Cunningham told the Record-Chronicle in an article published Wednesday. “My daughter is angry, frustrated. This, of course, brings up things for her as well. Not just her but all the other girls. Unfortunately, it is common practice in the school, not only physically but verbally.”
