11th REGION BOYS: Warhawks roll past Southern, 85-64

Mar. 9—LEXINGTON — The Eagles (23-10) couldn't match the size and length of the line-up Great Crossing (33-1) put on the floor on Saturday in the 11th Region Tournament semifinals.

It wasn't, however, that big advantage which allowed the Warhawks to build a big early lead.

Great Crossing hit 6-of-11 three-point attempts in the opening half and went into the break with an 18-point advantage.

The Warhawks continued to pull away in the second half to claim an 85-64 win at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. Great Crossing will face Lexington Catholic today in the championship.

Senior Zach Hudson had 22 points and four rebounds for Southern, while senior Braden Hudson had 17 points and three rebounds.

Malachi Moreno — the 11th Region Player of the Year — had 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Warhawks. Vince Dawson III had 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Great Crossing had 48 points in the paint, including a series of rim-rocking dunks from Moreno, and never trailed.

The Warhawks came into the game averaging just 5.7 three-pointers a game (195-of-503 — 38.8 percent). In the first half against Southern, Dawson was 3-of-4 from long range and Junius Burrell was 2-of-3 from three-point range. Gage Richardson also connected once from deep.

The Warhawks hit only five three-pointers during a 76-46 win over Madison Southern on Jan. 23 in Berea.

In the 11th Region semifinals, Great Crossing scored 13 of the first 15 points and took a 20-8 lead early in the second quarter on Richardson's three.

Southern never got any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Crossing shot 52.4 percent from the field (7-of-19 three-pointers) and hit 12-of-13 free throws.

Senior Jay Rose had 10 points for Southern, while junior point guard Casen Nobbe had nine point and five assists. Micah Whitaker, Mason Davis and Landon Adams each had two points.

The Eagles shot 42.9 percent overall (6-of-19 three-pointers) and hit 10-of-11 free throws.

Southern was making just its second appearance in the 11th Region semifinals. The Eagles have never been to the regional title game.
