10th-ranked Ripley rips game from Stonewall girls

Feb. 27—OKLMULGEE — The 16th-ranked Stonewall Lady Longhorns couldn't make enough plays down the stretch in a tough 35-32 loss to No. 10 Ripley Friday at the Class A Area Tournament at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee.

Ripley was eliminated the next night after dropping a 49-30 decision to No. 3 Quinton.

The Lady Longhorns playoff run ended at 22-7 and the Lady Warriors are done at 25-6.

"Not the ending we wanted, but boy did this team make me proud," said SHS girls head coach Dillon Monday via a social media post. "These girls showed up every single day and put the work in, put 'we over me' and were rewarded with a great playoff run."

Ripley 35, Stonewall 32

Stonewall tied the game at 32-32 when Lilly Wyche made the second of two free throws.

A Brooklyn Howell basket put Ripley ahead 34-32. She missed a free throw but got her own rebound. Makenna Justus then scored the final point of the game when she hit the second of two free shots.

The game was tight throughout. Both teams scored six points in each of the first two quarters, resulting in a 12-12 halftime tie. The Lady Longhorns outscored Ripley 7-5 in the third quarter to grab a 19-17 lead heading to the fourth period.

The fourth quarter alone featured four ties.

Wyche led the SHS offense with 12 points and made 4-of-7 free throws. Carlee Gayler also hit double figures with 10 points and made a pair of 3-point baskets.

Faith Ross was limited to five points but also had four rebounds and two assists before fouling out.

Ripley got a game-best 17 points from Howell. Kendyl Overton was next with eight points. She sank one 3-pointer and went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Ripley ended up 9-of-22 from the charity stripe and Stonewall sank 6-of-11 tries from the line.
