100-pound, 5-foot alligator seen chilling on North Carolina beach, photos show

A beachgoer snapped some photos of a 5-foot-long alligator chilling in the surf on a North Carolina beach.

Brandie Anderson spotted the gator on Sunday, June 5, at Fort Fisher, a beach and recreation area about 147 miles south of Raleigh.

Anderson said the reptile likely weighed 100 to 200 pounds.

American alligators live in freshwater habitats, including swamps, marshes, ponds, lakes and large rivers, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. But they’ve also been observed in saltwater and on beaches.

Anderson said the alligator rested in the surf for awhile before getting in the water and swimming further down the beach.
