New York Liberty Lead Seattle Storm 32-29 at Half
NEWARK, N.J.—The New York Liberty were able to survive Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird's four 3-pointers and played tough defense in the closing minute of the second quarter of the teams' Monday night showdown at the Prudential Center to go into the half with a 32-29 lead.
In the second quarter Bird hit a 3-pointer from the elbow and found forward Camille Little down low for the easy layup that got the Storm within 27-24. The Liberty's Cappie Pondexter then made consecutive jumpers from mid-range to hold off Seattle's charge, forcing the Storm to call a timeout after New York had gone up 31-24 with 4:22 left to play in the half.
Bird hit her fourth shot from downtown with 36.9 seconds left in the second, cutting the Liberty's lead to 32-29.
Pondexter was the top scorer for the Liberty in the first half, finishing with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Bird (4-for-8) topped all players with 12.
