NASCAR race guide: New York’s Watkins Glen International
NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series comes to historic Watkins Glen International in upstate New York on August 11. If you're planning on heading to this beautiful area for the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips 500 at the Glen, here is a guide to help you make the most of your NASCAR experience.
How to get there
Traffic is well-managed at the Glen, and extra lanes are created for large events, such as this one. It's always a good idea to allow plenty of time to avoid disappointment, but there shouldn't be any issues like the ones experienced in Kentucky a few weeks back.
The Glen is centrally located, and not far from quite a few major eastern U.S. cities, and nice surprise, parking is free at Watkins Glen International.
If you haven't purchased your tickets, I would recommend doing so as soon as possible. Prices range from $70 to $135.
Camping is a great way to enjoy a weekend of racing, and sites are available for both tents and RVs. Currently the sites available are for unreserved at a cost of $75 and includes camping from Thursday, August 11 to Sunday August 14.
Be sure to check all of the regulations for camping at Watkins Glen. There are special firewood requirements, and bring untreated firewood into New York State is not allowed. If you have pets, they will only be allowed in the camping area.
Nationwide Series qualifying starts on Saturday, August 13, at 9:45 a.m., the race begins at 6:00 p.m. The Sprint Cup Series qualifying is on Saturday at 11:40 a.m., and the race is on at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, August 14.
What you need to know
Hard sided coolers of any size are not allowed. You can bring a soft-sided cooler up to 6 x 6 x 12. No strollers, umbrellas or glass containers are allowed.
Watkins Glen is one of only two road courses that the Sprint Cup Series races on. The NASCAR driver with the most wins who will be racing on Sunday, is Tony Stewart. He'll be attempting to score his sixth victory at the Glen.
I grew up watching auto racing at the old Baylands Raceway in Fremont, California, and have been a fan ever since.
